29 Reasons Why A Millennial Will Buy Your Wine
For some reason, a lot of groups of people have concluded that we millennials only spend money on a bottle of wine if it’s under $10.
Those groups include:
- (Most notably) not millennials
- Millennial journalists speaking in generalities because they didn’t actually go out and research the market
- Wine marketing groups
Newsflash to the above:
GROWNUPS drink $9 wine too.
But more importantly, to companies selling wine online:
Millennials will buy a bottle of wine with a price tag they don’t like for many reasons. But if we’re going to make that decision, we want to make sure that we’re not wasting our money on a $34 wine that tastes the same as a $13 wine. I’m sure that applies to people in any generation with an admiration for wine and financial literacy, not just to late twenty- and thirty-something-year-olds.
I mention this because there’s a world of opportunity to sell more wine online without relying heavily on the aspect of price, holiday, and FOMO. Because as much as anyone loves the possibility of getting 40% off on wine (or anything really), it doesn’t quell the fear of wasting money.
You need to give a reason why, outside of money, a potential wine buyer should buy your wine.
You can start by reading these 29 reasons why a millennial will buy a bottle of wine even if they’re not thrilled about the price:
- Wine not? (Literally the first answer I got).
- Someone recommended it.
- They tried it before and loved the same flavors.
- The theme of the night
- Availability
- You get more air miles, LOL.
- To try something new
- The influence of family and peers
- The bottle was pretty
- If you’ve never seen it before
- It came in a cool pack (usually around the holidays)
- Stress relief
- Fancy wine tasting
- When you need to spend time with your crazy side of the family
- When you have a tickle in your throat
- To celebrate something
- For your heart, because (depending on the source you read) reds are good for your health
- The joy of a splurge
- To give to the host/hostess
- Location, location (of the wine)
- To give as a gift to family, friends, your boss, etc. (because some people would rather spend more on others than themselves)
- Ratings
- To impress someone/many someones
- Tried it and liked it
- To feel classy
- My personal favorite: to add to your growing collection to become “that wine snob”
- To pair it with your dinner
- The curiosity of finding out if it’s your c̶u̶p̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶t̶e̶a̶ glass of wine
- The brand is recognizable so they figure it oughta be good.
With hundreds of thousands of choices of wine on the market based on year, winery, price, location, availability, and more…you want to make it easy for millennial wine drinkers to choose you. That means you’ve got to give us a reason to buy your wine other than the reason being that it’s on sale. That doesn’t do anything to quell the fear of wasting money.
How can we justify buying wine from you with one of the decisions mentioned above? We want to make sure it makes sense for our situation.
With so many choices on the market, in our inboxes, in ads, and in stores, how can you make us feel like we made the right decision?
